Comedia neagră a regizorului Alejandro G. Iñárritu, BIRDMAN a primit Oscarul pentru cel mai bun film şi, alaturi de THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL conduce în topul trofeelor câştigate, cu patru, la cea de-a 87-a gală a premiilor acordate de Academia de film americană.
Cu nouă nominalizări la premiile Oscar 2015, filmul BIRDMAN a mai primit din partea Academiei americane trofeele pentru: cel mai bun scenariu original şi cea mai bună imagine. Pentru BIRDMAN, regizorul mexican Alejandro G. Iñárritu a castigat şi primul premiu OSCAR pentru cel mai bun regizor. 
Ținând cont de numarul de trofee câștigate, THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL poate fi şi el considerat un câştigător al ediţiei de anul acesta a premiilor Oscar. Nominalizat la nouă premii, filmul lui Wes Anderson a fost şi el recompensat tot cu patru astfel de trofee, la fel ca BIRDMAN. Premiile Oscar câştigate de THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL au fost pentru: cea mai bună coloană sonoră, cel mai bun machiaj/ cea mai bună coafură, cele mai bune costume şi cea mai bună regie artistică.
Drama WHIPLASH a regizorului Damien Chazelle, nominalizată în cinci categorii, a primit trei premii premii Oscar, pentru cel mai bun montaj, cel mai bun mixaj de sunet şi cel mai bun actor în rol secundar (J. K. Simmons).
BIG HERO 6 a câştigat premiul pentru cel mai bun lungmetraj animat, în timp ce IDA de Paweł Pawlikowski (Polonia), a primit premiul pentru cel mai bun film străin.
Cea de-a 87-a gală a premiilor Oscar a avut loc în noaptea de duminică spre luni, la Dolby Theatre din Hollywood/Los Angeles. Gala a fost prezentată de actorul Neil Patrick Harris cunoscut mai mult pentru rolurile sale din serialele de televiziune. In film, ultimul rol notabil al lui Neil Patrick Harris a fost în GONE GIRL al regizorului David Fincher – unul din marii absentii ai acestei gale a premiilor Oscar.
